Many schools still have mascots or logos that are offensive to Native American communities. The issue isn’t just limited to high school sports — the Washington Redskins football team has famously refused pressure to change the team’s identity. But many school districts don’t necessarily have the funding and resources required to change their logo, which is often branded on everything from gymnasiums to sports uniforms and printed materials.
That’s why, Adidas announced on Thursday that it’s leading a “nationwide voluntary initiative for high schools who want to change mascot names and identities.”
Of the 27,000 public high schools across the country, 2,000 can make the change. Participating schools will receive help from Adidas to design new mascots and logos, including financial assistance, since replacing the logo around the school and on athletic uniforms can stretch school budgets thin.
“Ultimately, it’s the teams, athletes, coaches and fans who decide what changes they want to make,” an Adidas representative said. “And if they want to make a change and we can help, then we want to help.”
