Stunt Tip Tuesday

Hey everyone! Today we’ve got some quick tips on twisting skills for both the bases & the flyers!⁣

💃🏼 HIP, HIPS, HIPS 💃🏼⁣
Twisting should be initiated and performed with the hips in order to maintain good body position and for the stunt to stay in the same spot. The hips are the centre of gravity for most flyers so keeping a tight centre is ideal for all twisting stunts. ⁣

🌪 POWER OF THE PIVOT 🌪⁣
As mentioned in a previous post, bases should pivot in twisting stunts in order to stay close with their other bases and to stay underneath their flyer. It disallows common mistakes of walking out of the stunt and not getting to your spots fast enough.⁣

⏱TIMING & SPEED ⏩⁣
In order for twisting skills to hit the top, flyers and bases have to make sure that they’re are fast from the bottom and initiate the twist at the same time. Doing both of these will ensure a nice sharp, clean twist that hits to the top every time ⁣

You’re 120 Years Old?! You’re Looking Fiiiiiine.

Happy birthday, cheerleading! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

120 years ago today, Johnny Campbell jumped the railings at a University of Minnesota game yelling and leading the crowd with a rousing:

“Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah!

Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!”

And became the very first cheerleader in history! Soon after, the University of Minnesota created an all-male yell squad, who continued to use Campbell’s cheer. In fact, the same cheer can be heard on the sidelines today.

So take a moment to thank Johnny Campbell and his enthusiasm, without which we wouldn’t have the vibrant, exciting and super cool sport we all love today.

Stunt Tip Tuesday

Hey everyone! Today we’ve got some quick tips on how to switch feet in the air, the tic tocs.

👟 STEP UP ☝⁣
Flyers always need to think “step up” or “lift” when switching their feet in a stunt. Whether it’s a switch up, low to high or high to high, thinking “lift” will ensure that your stunt is directed upwards and not stomping down onto your bases.⁣

👇 DIP & DIP 👇⁣
For the bases, whether it’s a one count or two count dip, however much you dip to pop for the tic toc is how much you need to dip when catching it. Absorbing the stunt through your legs allows for better stability & execution⁣.

👣 FEET FIRST 👣⁣
When switching to body positions, flyers need to make sure they give the bases their foot first before pulling their lines. If the lines are pulled too quickly, the supporting leg may not be where it needs to be⁣.

Slime Rodeo!

I’ve become so passionate about slime over the past two years that I wanted to bring together all the other passionate slimers like myself for a convention so we could meet each other. Hey everyone! Today we’ve got some quick tips for the high-flying stunts in a routine, the baskets⁣⁣!

🎶 HEADS, SHOULDERS, KNEES & TOES 🎶⁣⁣
Flyers should have their heads, shoulders, knees & toes all in a line when loading into the basket. This ensures that when they stand up fast, the flyer cuts through the air more efficiently, allowing the basket to go higher and straighter.⁣⁣

Team Australia takes on the WUCC

 

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!

Ever wondered what it’s like to compete overseas? These college athletes from Melbourne, Australia, went on a journey of a lifetime all the way to Lodz, Poland to compete in the FISU World University Cheerleading Championships. The dance team walked away with silver medals in Performance Cheer, Jazz and Hip Hop, with the cheer team finishing 5th in the Large Coed Premier division. We love seeing cheerleading stories from around the world!
