A video of the Lumberton High School cheerleaders performing a 9/11 cheer routine to audio from the day the towers fell has been viewed more than 25 million times on Facebook and YouTube.
The squad’s coach Lauren Sheffield says the squad has performed a 9/11 tribute routine every year since 2002. She also performed the routine when she was on the squad as a student.
Sheffield says the cheerleaders take the annual routine “very seriously.”
“We do this because we believe it is very important to honor and remember the first responders, those who gave their lives, and those who still mourn the hole left by lost loved ones,” she said.
The team’s coach added that she is very proud of her team and is amazed how many people have seen their performance.
“The girls are very dedicated in all they do,” she said. “They take it very seriously, and know that being a cheerleader is more than just Friday Night Lights; it’s making a difference in the lives of our community.”
