Cheerleading is something I will never forget as I get older. It has had a huge impact on my life, and I owe that to my coaches. From the moment I started the sport, they were there every step of the way and helped shape the person I am today. They supported me through every high and low. There are countless reasons I will always remember my cheer coaches, but these are the ones that mattered most.
Never Doubted Me Once
I cannot remember a single moment when my coaches did not believe in me. They had more confidence in me than I often had in myself. Before attempting new skills, they always offered encouragement that stayed with me. One phrase I heard often was, “I would never ask you to throw a skill I didn’t think you could handle.” Their belief pushed me to become a stronger athlete every day.
Made Me Laugh During the Hardest Times
The pressure leading up to big competitions could be overwhelming, and I sometimes pushed myself too hard. My coaches made sure I never lost sight of enjoying the sport. No matter how stressful things became, they always found a way to make me laugh and reset my mindset.
Pushed Me Past My Limits
Cheerleading helped me accomplish things I never thought were possible. My coaches pushed me beyond what I believed were my limits because they knew it would make me better. Through conditioning, challenges, and constant encouragement, they helped me achieve skills I once thought were out of reach.
Always There for Me
My coaches cared about me as more than just an athlete. They supported me personally and emotionally. When I made mistakes at competitions and struggled to move past them, they reminded me that one moment did not define me. They were the faces I looked for during routines, the last people to wish us luck, and the first ones to greet us when we walked off the mat.
Taught Me That Effort Is Worth It
They showed me that progress is not easy, but it is meaningful. There were seasons when we did not place first or struggled to hit clean routines. Those moments were frustrating, but they pushed us to work harder and come together as a team. When success finally came, it made every difficult practice worthwhile.
Instilled Discipline
Mistakes in practice were never ignored. If a stunt fell or a tumbling pass was missed, we repeated it until it was done correctly. Conditioning followed when instructions were not followed. While it could be frustrating in the moment, I understood that discipline was how we improved and stayed accountable.
Taught Me to Keep Going
Everyone has off days. There were practices where nothing went right, and frustration set in quickly. My coaches never allowed me to quit. They taught me that mistakes are part of growth and that persistence matters more than perfection.
Built My Confidence
My coaches noticed effort. When I worked hard on a skill or improved in an area, they acknowledged it. Whether it was feedback on tumbling, jumps, or appearance at competitions, their words helped build confidence that carried beyond cheerleading.
Removed “I Can’t” from My Vocabulary
Early in my cheer career, I said “I can’t” during practice and was immediately corrected. I learned that the phrase was not an option. That lesson stayed with me. Now, when faced with uncertainty, I focus on effort instead of doubt and commit to trying my hardest.
Made Me a Better Person and Athlete
My cheer coaches shaped who I am today. They taught me to believe in myself, work through challenges, and stay committed to growth. The bond between a coach and athlete is powerful and should never be overlooked. I am grateful for the role my coaches played in my life and for the trust they placed in me throughout my journey.
