Olympic bronze medalist Jordan Chiles has taken her fight to the Swiss Supreme Court, seeking justice after a controversial decision stripped her of her medal. Chiles has appealed to the Swiss Supreme Court to reinstate her 2024 Olympic bronze medal in floor exercise, which was revoked following a controversial decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The case has already stirred up significant discussion in the sports world and could set a precedent that affects other judged sports, including cheerleading, if it ever makes its way into the Olympics.
In August, during the floor exercise finals at the 2024 Olympics, Chiles was initially placed fifth, behind Romania’s Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. After an inquiry filed by Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, her score was recalculated, bumping her into third place, earning her the bronze. However, Romanian officials later challenged the inquiry, claiming it was submitted four seconds past the one-minute time limit for score disputes. CAS agreed with Romania’s argument, stripping Chiles of her medal and re-awarding it to Barbosu.
Why Is Chiles Taking This to the Swiss Supreme Court?
Chiles and USA Gymnastics argue that the CAS decision violated her right to a fair process by not considering key video evidence that, they believe, proves her coach’s inquiry was made within the allowed time frame. The appeal to the Swiss Supreme Court is the next step in what could be a lengthy legal battle to reverse the CAS ruling. USA Gymnastics has stood firmly behind Chiles, stating that they will continue to pursue justice for the athlete.
This case highlights the role that technology and fairness play in judged sports. With gymnastics, every second counts, and the timing of inquiries can be the difference between winning a medal and going home empty-handed.
Could Cheerleading Face Similar Challenges in the Olympics?
As cheerleading continues its journey toward potential inclusion in the Olympic Games, the challenges that sports like gymnastics face could soon become a reality for cheerleading as well. Judged sports often involve split-second decisions by both athletes and officials. In competitive cheerleading, routines are packed with complex stunts, tumbling, and pyramids, where even the smallest detail can affect the final score.
