College cheerleading offers athletes opportunities to compete for national championships, represent major athletic programs and continue their education while participating in the sport they love.

But choosing where to cheer in college involves more than championship rings.

The best college cheerleading programs offer a combination of competitive success, game-day experiences, academic opportunities, coaching, financial support and a strong team culture.

For 2026, Cheer Daily revisits its Top Colleges to Cheer rankings with an updated look at 75 programs across the United States, from major Division I universities to nationally competitive smaller schools and community colleges.

The rankings reflect the evolving landscape of collegiate cheerleading, including the results of the 2026 UCA and NCA College National Championships.

How We Ranked the Top Colleges to Cheer

Cheer Daily evaluated programs using five principal factors:

Competitive Success: Recent national championship results, historical performance and consistency in highly competitive divisions. Particular consideration was given to the 2026 UCA and NCA College National Championships.

Game-Day Experience: Opportunities to represent the university at football, basketball and other athletic events, including the atmosphere, visibility and traditions surrounding college sports.

Academics: The breadth of academic programs and educational opportunities available to students.

Scholarships and Financial Support: Documented scholarship opportunities, tuition assistance and other forms of program support. Because benefits vary and many schools do not publish cheer-specific awards, scholarship amounts were not assumed.

Program Opportunities: Coaching, competitive divisions, training resources, athlete development and the overall experience of participating in a collegiate spirit program.

The rankings represent Cheer Daily's editorial assessment rather than a standardized numerical scoring system. Schools compete in different divisions and organizations, and competitive results are not directly comparable across every category.

What to Consider When Choosing a College Cheerleading Program

A national championship is an impressive accomplishment, but it should not be the only factor in a college decision.

Athletes should consider their academic interests, financial circumstances, preferred competitive level and the time commitments associated with each program.

Some colleges emphasize national competition. Others focus primarily on representing the university at athletic events. Many programs provide opportunities to do both.

Prospective college cheerleaders should also research team structure. A university may field multiple teams with different responsibilities, skill requirements and opportunities to compete.

Do Colleges Offer Cheerleading Scholarships?

Yes, some colleges offer scholarships or financial support for cheerleaders, but opportunities vary significantly by institution.

Financial assistance may include tuition awards, leadership scholarships, academic scholarships, travel expenses, uniforms and other program benefits.

For example, Texas Tech lists leadership scholarships, out-of-state tuition support and other benefits as part of its spirit program.

Athletes should contact coaches and university financial aid offices to confirm available funding, eligibility requirements and whether awards are renewable.

Receiving a position on a college cheerleading team does not automatically guarantee a scholarship.

College Cheerleading vs. STUNT: What's the Difference?

Athletes researching collegiate opportunities should also consider STUNT, a competitive sport developed from cheerleading skills.

Traditional collegiate cheerleading frequently combines sideline responsibilities, community appearances and national competition.

STUNT uses a head-to-head competition format in which teams perform technical routines involving stunts, pyramids, tumbling and other skills.

In January 2026, NCAA members across Divisions I, II and III approved STUNT as an NCAA championship sport, with the first NCAA championship scheduled for spring 2027.

Some universities offer both cheerleading and STUNT programs, giving athletes additional collegiate pathways.

Finding the Right College Cheerleading Program

The right college cheerleading program depends on the individual athlete.

For some, competing for a national championship is the priority. Others dream of leading tens of thousands of fans during a Saturday football game or representing their university at a major basketball championship.

Academics, affordability, location and team culture should also play significant roles in the decision.

Cheer Daily's Top 75 Colleges to Cheer recognizes programs that offer different combinations of these opportunities.

Athletes are encouraged to attend recruitment clinics, connect with coaching staffs, review academic programs and research financial assistance before making their college decisions.

Editor's note: Cheer Daily's Top Colleges to Cheer rankings are an independent editorial selection. Competitive achievements reflect results available through the 2026 national championship season. Rankings do not constitute endorsements from the colleges or championship organizations. Scholarship information and team opportunities should be verified directly with each institution.
