College cheerleading offers athletes the opportunity to compete for national championships, represent major athletic programs and continue their education while participating in the sport they love.

But choosing where to cheer in college involves more than championship rings.

The best college cheerleading programs offer a combination of competitive success, game-day experiences, academic opportunities, scholarships, athlete development and strong team traditions.

For 2026, Cheer Daily ranks the top college cheerleading programs across the United States, recognizing national championship powerhouses, major university spirit programs, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), NAIA institutions and community colleges.

From the sidelines of major college football stadiums to the national championship stage in Daytona Beach and Orlando, these programs represent some of the most compelling opportunities in collegiate cheerleading.

How We Ranked the Top Colleges to Cheer

Cheer Daily evaluated programs using five principal factors:

Competitive Success: Recent national championship results, historical performance and consistency in competitive divisions, with particular consideration given to the 2026 UCA and NCA College National Championships.

Game-Day Experience: Opportunities to represent the institution at football, basketball and other athletic events, including the atmosphere and traditions surrounding college sports.

Academics: Degree programs, educational opportunities and pathways available to student-athletes.

Scholarships and Financial Support: Available cheerleading scholarships, tuition assistance, grants and other student-athlete benefits, where publicly documented.

Program Opportunities: Coaching, athletic development, competitive divisions, training resources and opportunities to continue participating at an elite level.

The rankings reflect Cheer Daily's independent editorial assessment. Schools compete across different divisions and championship organizations, and results are not directly comparable in every category.

Junior colleges, NAIA institutions and NCAA universities were evaluated with consideration for the different opportunities available to their student-athletes. A school's size or athletic conference does not automatically determine its ranking.

College Cheer Coaches: Help Us Keep These Rankings Accurate

Cheer Daily is building a comprehensive database of college cheerleading programs to better recognize the opportunities available to student-athletes across the country.

We invite college cheerleading coaches and program directors to submit updated information about their programs, including national championship results, scholarships, academic opportunities, recruiting details and athlete benefits.

Whether your program is included in our Top 80 or deserves consideration for future rankings, we want to hear from you.

Submit Your College Cheerleading Program Information

Your submissions will help improve the accuracy of our rankings, strengthen future college cheerleading coverage and connect prospective athletes with programs that match their academic and athletic goals.

What to Consider When Choosing a College Cheerleading Program

A national championship is an impressive accomplishment, but it should not be the only factor in a college decision.

Athletes should consider academic interests, financial circumstances, preferred competitive level, coaching philosophy and the time commitments associated with each program.

Some colleges emphasize national competition. Others focus primarily on representing the university at athletic events. Many programs provide opportunities to do both.

Prospective college cheerleaders should also research team structure, since a university may field multiple squads with different competitive divisions and responsibilities.

Do Colleges Offer Cheerleading Scholarships?

Yes. Some colleges offer cheerleading scholarships or financial support, but opportunities vary significantly by institution.

Financial assistance may include tuition awards, leadership scholarships, academic scholarships, travel expenses, uniforms and other program benefits.

Junior colleges can also provide significant financial support. Programs such as Trinity Valley and Navarro offer scholarships and additional student-athlete benefits, making two-year colleges important options for prospective athletes.

Students should contact coaches and university financial aid offices directly to confirm funding, eligibility requirements and renewal policies.

Are Junior Colleges Good for Competitive Cheerleading?

Absolutely. Several of collegiate cheerleading's most accomplished programs compete at two-year institutions.

Trinity Valley Community College and Navarro College have won numerous national championships and developed athletes who have continued their careers at major four-year universities and on the international stage.

Community colleges can provide competitive scholarships, academic pathways and athlete development opportunities, including the possibility of transferring to a four-year institution.

Some community colleges also offer select bachelor's degree programs, further expanding their educational opportunities.

For athletes focused on competition and development, junior colleges deserve serious consideration alongside four-year universities.

College Cheerleading vs. STUNT: What's the Difference?

Traditional collegiate cheerleading frequently combines sideline responsibilities, community appearances and national competition.

STUNT is a head-to-head competitive sport developed from cheerleading skills, featuring technical routines involving stunts, pyramids, tumbling and other elements.

In January 2026, NCAA members approved STUNT as an NCAA championship sport, with the first NCAA championship scheduled for spring 2027.

Some universities offer both competitive cheerleading and STUNT, creating additional opportunities for collegiate athletes.

Finding the Right College Cheerleading Program

The right college cheerleading program depends on the individual athlete.

For some, competing for national championships is the priority. Others dream of leading thousands of fans during a Saturday football game or representing their university at a major basketball championship.

Academics, affordability, location, coaching, team culture and long-term athletic goals should also factor into the decision.

Cheer Daily's Top 80 Colleges to Cheer recognizes programs that offer different combinations of these opportunities.

Athletes are encouraged to attend recruitment clinics, connect with coaching staffs, review academic programs and research scholarship opportunities before making their college decisions.

Editor's note: Cheer Daily's Top Colleges to Cheer rankings are an independent editorial selection. Championship achievements reflect the 2026 national championship season and available program histories. Rankings do not constitute endorsements from the institutions or championship organizations. Scholarship information and team opportunities should be verified directly with each institution.
