A feature documentary is now in production focusing on Jeff Webb, the founder of Varsity Spirit and one of the most influential figures in the modern cheerleading industry. The project is produced by September Club, a documentary studio known for collaborations with Netflix, Hulu, and ESPN Films.

“Jeff Webb’s story is one of entrepreneurship, industry influence, and leadership spanning over four decades,” said Jeremy Coon, executive producer and founder of September Club. “We are looking forward to capturing the key moments of his career and the evolution of cheerleading as a sport and business.”

The film explores Webb’s journey from launching Varsity in 1974 to helping drive cheerleading’s global expansion. A central focus of the documentary is his long-standing role in advancing the sport’s international legitimacy through the International Cheer Union, including efforts that led to recognition by the International Olympic Committee.

The documentary is directed by Frank Rainone, whose previous work includes Murder Among the Mormons, The Last Blockbuster, and Jim & Andy. Rainone described Webb’s career as a rare example of entrepreneurship reshaping an entire athletic industry.

Filming has already taken place in Memphis and Orlando, and the production team has compiled more than 50 hours of archival footage. According to September Club, the film will feature interviews with industry professionals and behind-the-scenes insight into the growth of competitive cheerleading, alongside an examination of the business strategies that helped Varsity expand across schools, all star programs, and national events.

The documentary will also address Webb’s later career, including his decision to step down as chairman of Varsity Spirit in 2020. He continues to serve as president of the International Cheer Union, which has led the successful charge for cheerleading’s recognition on the Olympic stage.

The film is expected to be released in 2026. Distribution details have not yet been announced.
