ST. PAUL, MN — The State of Minnesota has officially proclaimed November 2, 2025, as “Cheerleading Day,” honoring the state’s role as the birthplace of cheerleading and the generations of athletes who have carried the sport forward.

Signed by Governor Tim Walz and Secretary of State Steve Simon, the proclamation recognizes cheerleading’s deep Minnesota roots — tracing back to 1898, when University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell led the first organized crowd cheer. That moment marked the beginning of a tradition that has evolved into a worldwide sport.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signs proclamation declaring November 2 as Cheerleading Day.

“Cheerleading has deep roots in Minnesota, and this proclamation is a meaningful acknowledgment of the athletes and coaches who continue to carry that legacy forward,” said Krista Wigen and Lauryn Barron, directors of the Midwest College Cheer Combine. “We’re thrilled to see cheer recognized for the incredible dedication and community it represents here in Minnesota — and we’d also love to share that there’s more in motion to support cheerleaders across the Midwest, including some exciting initiatives under the emerging Midwest Cheer Association.”

The proclamation highlights cheerleading’s lasting impact, celebrating how it:

  • Inspires teamwork, dedication, discipline, and leadership among athletes;
  • Fosters school spirit and community engagement;
  • Has grown into a competitive, physically demanding sport requiring exceptional skill and perseverance; and
  • Positively shapes communities by promoting inclusivity, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

“Minnesota is proud to be the birthplace of cheerleading,” the proclamation states, honoring the athletes, coaches, and programs who have elevated the sport across the state and around the world.

As cheerleading celebrates its 127th birthday on November 2, the recognition from its home state underscores just how far the sport has come — from a single voice on a football field to a global athletic community.
